The Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics has an outstanding opportunity for a Staff Associate I in the Kousteni lab. In the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center and Edward P. Evans MDS Center and the Hematological Malignancies Initiative, the Kousteni lab investigates the fundamental mechanisms by which myeloid malignancies arise and develop from healthy hematopoietic stem cells.
Laboratory responsibilities of this individual include receiving and processing primary samples, managing the mouse colony. The incumbent will be working with the PI and staff to contribute to research projects and publications. This person should have strong previous laboratory research experience, preferably related to hematopoiesis, cancer, and/or stem cells, some evidence of prior publications, excellent technical, communication, and organizational skills.
Duties and responsibilities
o process primary blood samples, manage mouse colonies.
o working closely with the PI, staff, and collaborators to contribute and support ongoing research projects, employing the following methodologies:
· Human hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) isolation, genetic modification, cell culture, and molecular and functional analysis (by flow cytometry, microscopy, etc).
· iPSC culture, hematopoietic differentiation.
· Cloning and molecular biology, transfection, and generation of lentivirus.
· Mouse colony maintenance and bone marrow transplantation.
· Other lab tasks assigned as needed for individual research projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with at least 4 years of relevant research experience, or Master’s degree with equivalent experience.
- Strong technical skills in cell culture, preferably primary cell culture; flow cytometry; and animal experiments.
- Technical excellence and ability to follow as well as optimize protocols.
- Excellent oral and writing communication skills; computational skills a plus.
- Desire and ambition to contribute to scientific discoveries and publications.
